Settling into Life at Home

April 21, 2020

The coronavirus is keeping us indoors, but you may still have to step out for essential errands like grocery shopping, grabbing take-out meals or picking up prescriptions from the pharmacy. As you’re venturing out, be cautious of surfaces you touch in public to minimize the germs you may bring into your home.

You know that washing your hands frequently and not touching your face are some of the best practices you can do, but what else can you do to stay healthy? The EPA has released a list of products1 that are considered effective at killing the virus. Here are some additional ideas to keep your surfaces clean.2

  1. Wipe down your surfaces. Use disinfectant wipes once or twice a day.
  2. Couches and carpet can be cleaned with disinfectant spray. You can also spray your mattresses and tables.  And if you’re out of disinfectant wipes, use your spray on paper towels.
  3. Use a bleach mixture to clean your floors. The CDC recommends using one cup of bleach mixed with five gallons of water to mop your floor. Note: for hardwoods, use disinfecting wet mopping cloths or combine half a cup of white vinegar and one gallon of water.
  4. Use hydrogen peroxide on surfaces. Pour directly on surfaces like your sink, countertops, or toilets, and let it soak for 10-15 minutes. After allowing it to sit, scrub the area and rinse with water.
  5. Clean your car after running errands. Sanitize parts such as car door handles, keys, and steering wheel. Use disinfecting wipes on most except touchscreens and leather (specific leather cloths or microfiber cloths for touchscreens are best).

As many of us are adjusting to the new reality, we also need to adopt new habits to keep us healthy. Do you or any member of your family need any kind of assistance with supplies or healthcare information and assistance? Don’t hesitate to ask us for help. We’d be more than happy to see how we might be able to serve you.
